In June 2011, the motor tanker Copenhagen was put into service. The 110-meters long and 11.45-meters wide vessel was commissioned by the United Tankrederij (VT). Innovation in the field of construction and the drive have resulted in 50% fewer emissions, significant fuel savings, and a halving of the maintenance interval, while the ship has more power at its disposal.Four generators supply The Copenhagen’s electric power. In many cases, two generators supply sufficient power for propulsion. A single generator will often suffice on the canals. During the voyage, the generators provide the electrical power and also drive the cargo pumps and electric bow thruster.

The propellers were specially designed for the electric drive. Because an electric motor can deliver full power at low speeds, such a design does not have take into account lower power at lower speeds. The D&A® electric power management system adjusts the speed automatically to the power set by the bridge or whatever is available to it. The system is not speed-driven but power-driven. When less power is consumed than available, the management system increases the speed to that set by the bridge until full power is again completely used. When the speed is sufficient, the helmsman can also reduce power, so that, for example, one generator can be shut down. The propeller then searches for a new optimum for the available power. When the ship encounters more resistance in shallow water, the speed will automatically be slightly reduced. The skipper can then continue sailing slowly or choose to make more power available and activate an extra generator. D&A® electric was responsible for the design, implementation, commissioning and turnkey delivery of the complete drive system, comprising:

- 2 D&A® Main Switchboards for 4 generators

- 1 D&A® PMS power management system

- 2 D&A® Eprop panels for the propulsion of 650kW each

- 1 D&A® Ebow panel for the bow thruster of 500kW

- 10 D&A® Epump drives for the cargopumps of 40kW each

- 1 D&A® Rotating converter for the normal board net of 120kVA

- 4 generators suitable for the D&A® drive network

- 2 electric motors for propulsion

- 1 electric motor for the bow thruster

The Eprop system is a frequency-controlled diesel-electric drive that allows a normal barge to use up to 40% less fuel without any loss of speed. This result is determined by a different way of looking at the entire vessel, it’s normal sailing behaviour and the desired speed. The propulsion train is adjusted accordingly and shows significantly better fuel returns.
